In sharp contrast to 2004 which was hot and early, the 2005 vintage was cool and late. This can be considered a benefit for an early delicate varietal such as Pinot Grigio as it allows full ripeness without the stress and loss of freshness associated with heat. The picking decisions can be considered instead of forced, and handling the fruit under cool harvest conditions makes the pressing and winemaking both easier and better.
The Bayview Vineyard on Eighth St. East in Carneros was once again the source of the fruit. This relatively young vineyard is planted to the best Alsatian clones. It naturally sets a light crop with very small berries and clusters. This is why it is such a good candidate for a reserve approach in terms of the wine’;s style. Making a rich reserve style white wine is as much about the technique as the source and quality of the fruit. Pinot Grigio requires very careful low yield pressing. In all whites the choice of yeast is critical. I favor very weak strains such as Montrachet as they give richness and fullness to the flavor. Barrel fermentation creates complexity.
The overall impression of this wine is of weight, harmony and luxury. In some ways especially texture it resembles a Chardonnay, but the aroma is uniquely Pinot with its hints of violet and lavender. Like Pinot Noir a bit of bottle age seems to bring the flavors into balance. Because of its style this wine can stand up to quite rich food.

Pinot Grigio Wine Information

Pinot Gris (or Pinot Grigio as it is known in Italy) probably is the best-known 'white' variant-clone of Pinot Noir. Pinot Gris can be tangy and light (Italian style) or quite rich, round and full bodied (Alsacian style). We have chosen to use the techniques that have been perfected in Alsace. This results in a dry white wine in the reserve style and with the potential to age well.
